Responsible Development

Better Buildings NY supports new construction that improves a community’s quality of life, strengthens the economy, and preserves a neighborhood’s look, feel, and character. Responsible development relies on community buy-in and a real vision for the future of a neighborhood.

Goals

We are working to ensure that the community’s voice is heard during all stages of new development. Successful development does not happen in a vacuum. Unfortunately, it is an all too common occurrence for poorly considered new construction to be approved without input from the community. Development which improves our quality of life comes about when an earnest effort is made to incorporate the needs of the neighborhood. We support smarter planning procedures that require new construction to only be approved when accompanied by appropriate infrastructure improvements. Poorly planned new development can overpower the local infrastructure, such as transportation, energy, water, and education. Giant residential buildings overwhelm schools, subways, and roads when they are hastily constructed. The ability of a neighborhood to successfully incorporate new construction relies upon smart planning. We are supporting community preservation efforts which ensure that new development fits within the context of its neighborhood. New development should respect the context and history of the neighborhood. We should support buildings that strengthen the entire community, give it the opportunity to grow, and also preserve the look and feel of the neighborhood.
